Muslim cleric is charged with forcing two 16-year-olds to get married in Nikah ceremony
A Muslim cleric has been charged under forced marriage legislation with illegally allowing two 16-year-olds to get married in a Nikah ceremony.
Ashraf Osmani, 52, of Northampton, was charged under Section 121 of the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act, as amended by the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Minimum Age) Act 2022.
The religious leader allegedly carried out a marriage ceremony between two teens at the Central Mosque Northampton in November 2023.
He is a serving imam at the Mosque as well as its most senior Muslim cleric.
Osmani, a Bangladesh-born British national, will appear before Northampton Magistrates' Court on Thursday, September 11.
