They are on call at all hours of the day to drop everything and come to the aid of stricken hillwalkers.
But one Highland mountain rescue team was in for a surprise when they had to recover a cow which had become stuck in a bog.

The clumsy animal had to be pulled out of the deep mud by members of Glenelg Mountain Rescue team after ending up neck deep in the mud.
Around half a dozen volunteers worked to bring the stricken cow to safety, who started munching on grass as soon as she was brought out.

A spokesman from the Inverness-shire based mountain rescue team said: ‘The team went to the rescue of a cow that had become trapped in mud on the hill.
‘Successful outcome and a happy Heffer, and a fine training exercise for the team.’
