"One option we're considering is that the jewelry was positioned there as part of an established Hellenistic custom," Dr Zindel stated.

'Traditionally, young women getting ready for marriage would place their childhood items such as jewellery under the foundation of what would become their new home, marking the transition from childhood to adulthood.'

The researchers pointed out that the design of the jewelry mirrors the fashion tendencies of that era, which were significantly shaped by Eastern influences like those from India and Persia.

The cultural exchange was facilitated by the expansions of Alexander the Great, thereby establishing trade routes among these areas.

The excavation, which was a collaborative project between the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) and Tel Aviv University, also revealed multiple ancient bronze earrings adorned with images of a horned creature along with an intricately designed gold bead.

These findings highlight the prosperity and advanced nature of Jerusalem's inhabitants in those times.

Efrat Bocher, who leads the excavation, remarked: "For the first time in Jerusalem, we have unearthed a substantial trove of Hellenistic gold jewelry. This find is remarkable as it sheds light on the wealth and daily life of the people living here during that period."
