OPPO and Discovery Channel Celebrate World Day for Cultural Diversity Together

In honour of the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, OPPO reiterates its dedication to cultural conservation and intercultural comprehension via their international project 'Culture in a Shot', in collaboration with Discovery Channel.

Launched in 2024, this global initiative enters its second year and has documented cultures in 15 countries, continuing its mission to celebrate and preserve cultural diversity through OPPO’s imaging technology.

Operating across more than 70 countries and catering to approximately 670 million users globally, our tech firm embraces cultural diversity as a core aspect of who we are.

With the 2025 theme "Embrace the Instant," this year OPPO alongside Discovery Channel delves into renowned global events and jubilations—ranging from the enigmatic allure of the Venice Carnival in Italy and the customs of Nauryz in Kazakhstan, to the lively revelries steeped in Brazilian football tradition.

Using OPPO smartphones as the medium, this project documents the tales surrounding these festivities and showcases how young people are revitalizing customs through innovative approaches.

Universal joy of celebration

Cultural happenings serve as the lifeblood of societies—vibrant manifestations of heritage, identity, and interpersonal connections.

This year’s adventure kicks off in Italy at the renowned Venice Carnival, an event where past meets imagination.

Having originated from noble customs, this event has evolved into an international cultural phenomenon that encourages participation from individuals of every background.

Through OPPO’s lens, Venice springs to life with its colorful masks, enduring architecture, and exuberant atmosphere.

When traveling to Kazakhstan, attention shifts towards Nauryz, the traditional New Year celebration that embodies rejuvenation, abundance, and harmony. Rooted deeply within historical traditions, this festive event converts urban areas into vast outdoor venues brimming with melodies, dances, and ornate attire.

A key part of the festival is sharing traditional meals like kumys (fermented horse milk) and nauryz-kozhe, a symbolic seven-ingredient dish.

OPPO’s imaging technology breathes life into these vibrant customs—preserving the coziness of family reunions and the promise of fresh starts.

Apart from conventional festivities, certain types of celebrations are integrated into daily existence.

In Brazil, the focus shifts to another type of celebration – soccer. Beyond being merely a sport, soccer serves as a national festival and cultural rite in Brazil, enjoyed across various age groups and social strata.

The tale of 19-year-old footballer Mario Cesar Conceicao Faria Júnior highlights how soccer acts as a vital pulse in Brazilian culture—demonstrating that the young generation still pursues their aspirations through this sport.

Whether it’s played on side streets or grand arenas, football serves as a common beat that sparks community spirit, motivates young people, and brings the country together in unified elation.

Tapestry of heritage stories

In addition to the professional photography captured by OPPO and the Discovery Channel, OPPO also motivates its global community members to capture and share their own cultural identities.

Since 2024, OPPO has been implementing the #OPPOMalaysiaThroughTheLens project in Malaysia with support from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) as well as the Malaysian National Commission for UNESCO (MNCU).

This year, the initiative took hold of the Thaipusam festival, a lively Malaysian Hindu custom, showcasing how these cultural traditions continue to be handed down from one generation to another.

Beyond just being a visual record, Culture in a Shot aims at engagement—giving local voices more prominence and inspiring individuals worldwide to embrace their cultural legacy with enthusiasm.

To broaden this influence, the campaign carries on via social media with the #OPPOCulturalChallenge on TikTok.

With the hashtags #OPPOxDiscovery and #OPPOCulturalChallenge, participants are encouraged to showcase how they uphold and cherish their customs as part of everyday living.

During Thailand’s Songkran Festival, young creators took up the challenge—to blend innovation with heritage and infuse fresh energy into time-honoured traditions.

Their contributions demonstrate that culture is not stagnant; it changes as it is shared, reinterpreted, and personalized for a new era.
