New Era for the Chinese Diaspora in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: The University of Malaya (UM) is set to host distinguished academics, researchers, and innovative minds globally at the 12th International Conference organised by the International Society for the Study of Chinese Overseas (ISSCO). This event marks a significant scholarly assembly focused on the worldwide Chinese diaspora.
The conference will take place from Nov 4 to 6, themed “Chinese Overseas in a Changing World: Global Networks, Local Realities”.
Approximately 250 to 300 papers are anticipated to be presented throughout 13 concurrent sessions.
"Originally, we anticipated approximately 150 entries; however, I was informed that we have now surpassed more than 200 paper submissions," stated Prof Datuk Dr Danny Wong Tze Ken, who chairs the ISSCO 2025 organizing committee and also serves as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at UM.
He stressed that the event is not just about research delivery; it’s about meaningful exchange.
This conference will act as an essential platform where individuals can gather not only to voice their opinions but also to listen, contemplate, and work together.
"The true worth is found in these interactions, as they lead to network formation, friendship building, and long-lasting academic collaborations," he stated during a press briefing yesterday.
Wong added that ISSCO 2025 also aims to engage voices from outside traditional university settings.
There are numerous researchers not connected to universities who are producing remarkable work. We aim to include them in the discussion as well.
"As they bring new viewpoints and varying methods, true learning occurs," he stated.
To encourage wider participation, particularly among young scholars, ISSCO 2025 will also launch the Global Scholars Support and Talent Development Initiative.
It will accommodate 20 postgraduate students from abroad by providing lodging for four nights, specifically for those whose submissions have been approved.
The keynote addresses will be presented by globally acknowledged academics Prof Tan Chee Beng andAssoc Prof Dr Rachel Leow, who have both significantly impacted their area of study.
At the launch, UM’s Chinese Studies Department adjunct professor Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy shared his thoughts, expressing great pride in having alumni engaged with the department’s initiatives.
"This marks the first occasion for the ISSCO conference to be hosted at UM. We consider these endeavors as part of our responsibilities and strive to make significant contributions," he stated.
Chan, who previously served as the transportation minister, has long supported the university.
In his numerous contributions, Chan gave his vast collection related to "The Story of the Stone" to UM, establishing the "Red Mansion Chronicles Study Collection".
Chan likewise pondered over his educational path, giving credit to his advisor Professor Tan Chee Beng.
The Ikhasas Group has committed RM100,000 to back ISSCO 2025, whereas Pejati, the alumni group for Chinese Studies, has donated RM20,000 for the conference activities and community engagement.
The Chief Operating Officer of Ikhasas Group, Datuk Kee Sock Kheng, stated that the conference's theme is both relevant and significant.
The academic collaborators for ISSCO 2025 consist of Jinan University, Wenzhou University, Universitas Kristen Maranatha, and the Institute of Science Innovation and Culture at Rajamangala University of Technology Krungthep in Thailand.
